Paralympic Winter Games drawing closer

Slovenia will be represented by 17-year old Alpine skier Jernej Slivnik

In PyeongChang, Slovenia will be represented by 17-year old Alpine skier Jernej Slivnik who will compete in the slalom and giant slalom.

Although under the Yugoslav flag, the first Slovenian to win a medal at the Paralympics was Jože Okoren in 1972 (discus). At the 1984 Games in Innsbruck, Franc Komar took the bronze medal in Alpine combined, so far the only Slovenian para-athlete to return from the winter games with a medal.

The first gold medallist competing under the Slovenian flag at the Paralympics was Franjo Izlakar in Barcelona. To his gold medal in the shot put, he added gold in the discus. Slovenia has not yet had a medallist at the winter Paralympics.

Slovenians to participate in the Paralympics for the fifth time

The first Winter Paralympic Games were held in 1976 in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Then once in Norway and twice in Austria, and once each in France, Japan, the USA, Italy, Canada and Russia.

The Paralympics in PyeongChang are the fifth games for Slovenian athletes. In 1998 Slovenia was represented by Srečko Kos and in 2006 by Žiga Breznik and Gal Jakič, all of them para-Alpine skiers. Jakič also competed in 2010 and 2014.
Since Slovenia became independent, no Slovenian Paralympian has returned home with a medal. This year we pin our hopes on Jernej Slivnik, who will proudly carry the flag of Slovenia in South Korea. Let's cheer him on!
